Should we delete old topics?

Postby ekuseru » Sat Jan 10, 2009 10:45 pm

And when I say old topics I mean really old topics (more than a year without a new reply on them).

When a old topic is deleted we could move them to a trash forum for a while so they will be still available.

Ideas?

yeah, i think that's a good idea, the forums seem a bit cluttered.
and the trash idea is good too.

maybe we should delete locked ones too, unless they are important.

Although, if we do delete the posts. Don't the member post count get affected as well? Like maybe only delete threads that really have no meaning, and almost no posts at all.

Well about the users account deactivation, they got erased, sorry but there's no discussion... I think that more than 6 months without even loggin in are enough to say you don't want to post in the forums.

And about the old topics, we can do that, delete only threads with no meaning. So we'll be performing the cleaning tasks from now on that way.

i think deleting the old topics sounds like a good plan, but i ve also run into another problem, useless topics. like when someone makes a topic only to find out that that opic has been made for some time. i make some sometimes and i wouldnt mind if they are just erased an freed up space.

question: if we delet old topics do we lose count of thoese posts that we made?

That's what I'll do, remove useless topics. Don't worry there won't be too much.

And yes it affects to your post count.

I think that they should be deleted. And if someone suddenly wants to talk about that particular subject again, they can just create a new (updated) topic.
That's what people are more likely to do anyway, instead of searching to see if the topic already exists.

Yeah, I agree with Hannah there.
Becasue the forum is starting to look cluttered, and if they haven't been posted in for a while, and are just shoved to the back, they're not that important.
Also, ones with useful links etc can be placed in Trash.

But some old topics are really interesting, maybe once a thread was popular, but the members got tired of it, but with new members coming, maybe they would like to post in that thread. :yeah: Myself, I really like going thru old threads and trying to bring the interesting ones back to life. 8)

yeah i think the trash idea is pretty good. i think some people might like going through old threads to possibly get a background of the perfume community. so no, don't delete them, but clutter is no good either.

My first post here yesterday was in a really interesting topic which hadn't been posted in for over a year, and as soon as I revived it by posting in it, another member also added a post. So I think, be very selective in deleting old topics, cos some of them may just deal with some past phase of Perfume or or Perfume fandom, which won't attract more posts and yet are highly interesting to read if you like to know about past stuff.

With site-specific Google searching you can easily trawl up specific old stuff, even when the forum Search function is down, by including site:perfume-city.com in the search, so that you only get results from this site.

So I would say, unless there is like a real need to save space, delete as little as possible. New current stuff will always come to the top anyway, and old stuff may sometimes be interesting. I don't expect everyone to agree with me though :P  :hm:
